Instrument Rating
Instrument (IF) Rating
The Instruments (IF) Rating teaches pilots how instruments in the aircraft operate. It forms part of the Commercial Pilots Licence, but can also be done separately.
Our IF Rating course gives students the opportunity to experience flying virtually and realistically. Students spend a minimum of 40 hours of flying in order to obtain an IF Rating. These 40 hours are split in two - 20 hours instrument flying (performed on a suitable instrument aircraft) and 20 hours simulator flying. Note that if you have a night rating, you would have already flown 5 hours simulator and 5 hours in the actual aircraft.

Notes:
- The candidate must be night rated prior to the IF rating issue
- The IF rating test can be part of the CPL final test
- Flying will take place with Foggles
- There should be an attempt to do at least two sorties during the night with approaches via a facility
- Final preparation will be in an retractable aircraft when preparing for the CPL test
- Renewals may be conducted on non-retractable aircraft
- When added to the Night Rating IF, a total of 40 hours IF would have been flown
- 10 IF hours (5 simulator and 5 aircraft) flown during the Night Flying phase counts towards the IF rating, therefore an additional 15 hours in the simulator and 15 hours in the aircraft must be flown to get to the total of 40 hours IF
- Night flying is not IF flying and cannot count as such towards the IF rating
